I saw Gogol Bordello in Hollywood (The Knitting Factory). It was utmost riot. There was every flavor of Balkan people, Ukrainians, Gutsuls, Gipsies - you name it. Everyone was dancing like crazy. Two half naked girls in ripped 'tel'niashka" were dancing on giant drums. It was pretty sobering for my Russian friends to see how different and how high energy this Carpathian Ukrainian Gipsy mix was.

Later a talent scout e-mailed me in search of some funny "Eastern European Guy" to play a role in a movie. They couldn't reach Lyapis Trubetskoj through his website. So I recommended the guy from Gogol-Bordello as my second choice. He ended up playing in "Everything is Illuminated".

BTW, I haven't seen my name in credits to the movie :)

Red Elvises come often here. I saw them in Long Beach Blue Cafe. They were good enough. Not as good or as authentic as Gogol-Bordello. They play very eclectic mix, drift from surfer rock, to some Balkan version of ska, to God knows what. I remember a Kyrgyz girl and I enjoyed dancing their Sirtaki :) And it was very wrong to play this music to Blues crowd :)))
